Below is a twenty piso commemorative note issued in 2023 for the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Central Bank of The Philippines (Bango Sentral ng Pilippinas) 1993 - 2023. The Philippines's central bank was first established on 03.01.1949. In 1993 (3rd July), it reestablished itself under the New Central Bank Act.

 

The design for this note is the same as the 2010 series but with a commemorative logo added on around the watermark area. This note is printed with a special prefix of BSP (Bango Sentral ng Pilipinas).

 

Twenty Piso

Manuel Luis Quezon y Molina (b.1878-1944)

Front - The portrait of Manuel Luis Quezon y Molina (b.1878-1944) in the center left. Manuel Quezon was the President of the Commonwealth of the Philippines from 1935 until his death in 1944. As the Japanese Imperial Army occupied the Philippines from 1942 to 1945, he set up his Government in exile in the US (Washington D.C.) and he died in office on 01.08.1944, almost one year before the end of the Second World War in August 1945. To the left is a scene of the people gathering together during the proclamation of Filipino as national language in 1935. In the center is the Malacanang palace, the official residence and office of the President of the Philippines.

* Felipe Manguiat Medalla has only served as the Central Bank governor for a year when the term of the position expired. He took over the role on 30.06.2022 when the new President appointed the previous governor as the new Secretary of Finance under the new Marcos's administration. Medalla was appointed to the Bank Governor on 04.03.2019. He only lasted for one and a half years as the Secretary of Finance and was replaced by Ralph Gonzalez Recto in early 2024.

Back - To the left is the outline map of the Philippines. In the center is an Asian palm civet and in the background is the Banaue Rice terraces, an UNESCO World Heritage site. The Banaue Rice Terraces is located on the northern part of Luzon island. You can see the location of these Banaue Rice Terraces on the map printed on the left side of the note. The location is highlighted with a dot on the island of Luzon.

This commemorative note was issued to celebrate the 100th Year of the Church of Christ (Iglesia ni Cristo). The Church was founded on 27.7.1914 (registered) by Felix y Manalo. The Church of Christ is located in Quezon City in the Philippines. The Church also runs a private institution of higher education, called New Era University and it is also located in Quezon City. Interesting is that the note issued is dated 2013 and not 2014.

2014 marks the centennial anniversary of Shell companies in the Philippines. Shell first started it's business in the Philippines in 1914. Today, Shell companies operations include oil and gas exploration, production, oil refining, distribution and sales to consumers. Shell is one of the country's largest investors and employs in excess of 3,000 staff nationwide. I must say that it is strange to see a country issuing a banknote to celebrate a private entity achievement.

On 18.10.2012, the Philippines President Benigno S Aquino lll declared 2013 the National Year of Rice. The NYR is a government programme led by the Department of Agriculture. The aim of this programme is to achieve rice self sufficiency in the country. Rice is a staple food for more than half the world's population, and rice is also a staple food for the majority of the people in the Philippines as well. This programme involved everyone from the farmers to the end users by encouraging the use of better technologies to increase better quantity and quality of rice and also to reduce consumption wastage among the end users.

The story continues. It appears that 'almost' every reprint of notes, especially the 50 and 100 Piso are printed with overprint commemorative text and logo. It seems the Central Bank will issue notes to commemorate whatever events, institutions, buildings or any occasions they see fit.

Trinity University of Asia (aka TUA) was established in 1963 as an elementary, high school and collegiate educational institution. TUA was formerly known as Trinity College of Quezon City and on the 18 of July 2006, the institution was then granted University status. TUA currently has more than 6000 students and it is located at 275 E. Rodriguez Sr. Avenue Quezon City Philippines.

The Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation (PDIC) was established on June 22, 1963 by Republic Act 3591 to provide depositor protection and help maintain stability in the financial system. Its main function is to provide permanent and continuing deposit insurance to all depositors. As at 01.01.2009, the maximum deposit insurance coverage is P500,000 per depositor.

Philippines 50 Piso St Pedro Calungsod Canonisation 1673-2012 Commemorative. San Pedro Calungsod was born in 1654 and died as a martyr in Guam on 2.4.1672. He was also known as San Pedro Calungsod de Cebu and was officially canonised by Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican on 21.10.2012. It's incredible that the Central Bank keeps churning out commemorative notes just like minting new postage stamps and coins solely for numismatic purposes.

Philippines 100 Piso 2012 Manila Hotel Commemorative. To those who are not living in the Philippines, they must be wondering why a banknote was issued to celebrate this hotel. Well, the Manila Hotel is the most well known and prestigious hotel in the country. The hotel was first opened on 4.7.2012 and obviously this note was overprinted to celebrate the 100th year of it's inception. Since then, the hotel has been the temporary home of many well known personalities, royal families, the rich and the famous, politicians both local and foreign (the good, the bad and the ugly) including General MacArthur and his family, the Japanese army during WWII, Bob Hope, Marlon Brando, Tyrone Power, John Foster Dulles, Robert Kennedy, Sir Anthony Eden, Charlton Heston, Burgess Meredith, the Rockefeller brothers, John Wayne, Publisher Henry Luce, Richard Nixon, Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon B Johnson, the Beatles, King Juan Carlos de Bourbon and Queen Sofia of Spain, Prince Albert of Monaco, Prince of Cambodia Norodom Ranariddh, Benazir Bhutto, Indonesia Megawati Soekarmoputri, Romania Ion Iliescu, South Korea Roh Moo-Hyun and Bill Clinton. Of course there are many others too, but just too many to mention here, after all, this blog site is all about money only! Well, everyone has been there except me. I wonder if you have to pay just to get into the lobby?

It is interesting to note that for this commemorative note, it comes in two varieties. The difference between the two is that a year date (1999) is added to the second issue, located on the front left hand side just below the value denomination of 50. The first issue (Prefix LH) was signed by the 12th President, Fidel Valdez Ramos (1992-1998), and the second note (Prefix SD) was signed by the 13th President, Joseph Ejercito Estrada (1998-2001). President Estrada was forced out of office in 2001 following corruption charges filed against him. Both notes are counter signed by the Governor of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Gabriel C Singson (1993-1999). It should also be noted that the names of the two signatures were also added to the second note, whilst the first has none. Here I have added the second note to my posting.

The Philippines 100 Piso 2011 Commemorative. This is an overprinted commemorative, celebrating the 100th Years of Lasallian presence in the Philippines. It seems that there is no end to issuing commemorative notes from the central bank. This is, of course, good for the collectors, after all, the central bank is making our collection more interesting. Free interest loan to them too and many happy collectors. This is a win-win situation. Just keep churning them, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, salamat!

Footnote: This note celebrates the 45th year of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asia Nations). ASEAN was formed on 08.08.1967 by the founding members of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The aims of ASEAN include accelerating economic growth, social progress, cultural development among its members, protection of regional peace and stability, and opportunities for member countries to discuss differences peacefully. Since then, the membership expanded to include Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

75th Anniversary of Ateneo Law School 1936-2011

The Ateneo de Manila opened its Law School on June 6, 1936, with Manuel Lim as the first Dean. The school was closed temporarily in 1941 as a result of the outbreak of the Second World War. The destruction of its buildings during the battle for the liberation of Manila delayed the resumption of classes after the war. In 1948, the Ateneo Law School was reopened and since then the school has produced several bar topnotchers, jurists, legislators, academicians and noted legal practitioners. In 2011, the school celebrated it's Diamond Anniversary and as such, this note was issued to celebrate this very special occassion.
