Total commemorative banknotes issued is under 1,500 pieces. If you have achieved any figures close to this, then you are doing extremely well, as many of the older commemorative notes are hard to find even in poor conditions.

Opinion: Many collectors of commemorative banknotes would have come across with those Somaliland sets overprinted with gold and silver texts with the following wordings - 5th Anniversary of Independence 18 May 1996 [Sanad Gurade 5ee Gobanimadda 18 May 1996]. I believe these are "home made" (or fake) and not authorised by the central bank. My argument is simple. No central bank would have issued an overprint commemorative banknote that the texts are so large that it would cover the two signatures on the note as well as part of the serial numbers. Even if these are genuine notes, then these could be issued as souvenir sheets and not as legal tender. As I said before, this is my opinion. If you have paid top dollars for these, please think about my argument. There is always a sucker around the corner, including me of course!

All comments are most welcome but it has to be subjects related to banknotes or banknotes collection. If not, it will not be approved. Thanks

Malawi - 1000 Kwacha 50th Independence Commemorative

50th Years of Independence Commemorative
One Thousand Kwacha
Dated 2014, P63
In 2004, the Reserve Bank of Malawi released a 50 Kwacha commemorative note celebrating the country's 40 Years of Independence 1964-2004. Fast forward 10 years, and in 2014, the Reserve Bank issued another commemorative note. This time is a 1000 Kwacha value, celebrating the country's Golden Jubilee of Independence 1964-2014. Independence day is celebrated on 6th of June. The official name of this country is the Republic of Malawi. Prior to gaining independence, the country was known as Nyasaland between 1907 to 1964. The designs for this note is the same as the current 1000 Kwacha in circulation except that it has the following text printed on the lower right corner of the note - "50 Years of Independence". The Independence date of 6th July 2014 is also imprinted on the note. This note depicts the portrait of the late Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda (b.1898-1997), who ruled the country from 1964 to 1993. He was first appointed as the Prime Minister following gaining independent from the British. In 1966 he became the country's first President and later in 1970 as President for Life under a one-party rule system. In 1993 a referendum was called ended his one-party state system. He then ran for the President post under a democratic systems in 1994 and lost. He died in South Africa in 1997.

The Republic of Malawi was once know as the British Central Africa and

the  British  government was accredited to the  Kings and Chiefs of
Central Africa. In 1891 the British established the British Central Africa
protectorate. The country obtained it's independence from the British
on  6th July 1964 and changed it's name from Nyasaland to Malawi.
Malawi is also a member  of the Commonwealth. The country's motto
is  Unity and Freedom.
