North Korea - 5000 Won 70th Year of Diplomatic Relationship between China and North Korea 1949 - 2019

This 5000 won note was issued to celebrate the 70th Year of Diplomatic Relationship between China and North Korea 1949 - 2019. The diplomatic relationship between the two countries started on 06.10.1949.

The design on this note is the same as those last issued but with the following commemorative text added to the watermark area;

On the right it also has the following Korean character printed in red;

Two commemorative notes with year dates 1948-1918 overprint, celebrating the nation's 70th Year of Independence. These notes have the face values of 1000 and 2000 won respectively.

I understand that the North Korean won are not negotiable outside the country nor it holds any value against any foreign currencies. In North Korea, the Chinese yuan, USD, Euro and the Japanese yen are acceptable in certain designated shopping centers for foreigners.

I have added these two notes of 50, 200 and 500 Won to this posting. These notes are printed with the same text as the 1000 and 2000 won below. In addition to the text, it also printed two other Korean words on the right side of the notes - "기념" (ginyeon) in red. In straight Google translation in English, it means "Commemoration". As you can see, those two notes issued earlier do not have these 기념 words added to the notes. Also the colours of the commemorative text are not the same either. It is not sure if all these were printed all at the same time or they were printed as and when required. I wonder if there are other denominations (5, 10, 50, 100 and 5000 won) issued for this commemorative series, and I am not surprised if we see more issued at a later date.

From the three notes (50, 200 and 500 won), the commemorative tests are printed with a lager font (in red) than those 1000 and 2000 won issued earlier. Therefore it is unsure if all these notes were printed at the same time or separately.

North Korea - 5000 Won 2017 Commemorative Kim Jong-Suk

This is a commemorative collector note of 5000 won issued in 2017 commemorating the 100th Birthday Anniversary of the late Kim Jong-Suk (김정숙/金正淑) who died in 1949. Kim Jong-Suk was the first wife of Kim Il-Sung (1912-1994) who ruled North Korea from 1948 to until his death in 1994. Based on this new issue, it would have suggested that Kim Jong-Suk was born in circa 1917. However various searches on the Internet have suggested that she may have been born in 1919. Most people would have agreed that she died when she was in her late 20s, however the circumstances as to how she died was not clear.

Is this a collector series note printed with 7 zeros but without the usual words "견본" (sample/specimen) printed across? It is not clear if any normal serial numbered notes have been issued for circulation. More importantly, are these notes legit or just a novelty printed for whatever celebration they wanted it to be? If this is the case, who printed them? There must be a simple explanation why these notes are all printed with zeros. The design of this note is the same as the one that first issued in 2014 (P67 dated 2013) except that the following commemorative texts are printed on the watermark area - 항일의녀성영웅김정숙동지탄생100돐기념 (basically translated as; The heroine of anti-Japanese, heroine Kim Jong-Suk's 100th birthday).

North Korea - 5000 Won Commemorative 100th Birthday of Late President Kim Il-sung

5000 Won dated 2013. This note was issued to celebrate the late President Kim Il-sung's 100th Birthday (b15.04.1912). President Kim birth name was Kim Song-ju and died 08.07.1994, aged 82. Not sure when this note was meant to be issued, but given that Kim was born in 1912, the Centennial celebration should be 2012.

5000 Won dated 2013. This note was issued to commemorate the 70th Year (Septuagennial) of the founding of the Workers Party of North Korea (WPNK). The Workers Party of North Korea was established during the founding congress meeting held on 28-30 August 1946 with congress elected Kim Tu-bong as the party first Chairman and Kim Il-sung as his deputy. This note has 7-zero serial number but does not have the usual Korean Specimen printed on it. Is this note real or it's just a home made piece? Were there any circulating notes issued?

Kim Il-sung, 15.4.1912 to 8.7.1994, ruled North Korea from 8.9.1948 until his dealth in 1994. His birth name was Kim Song-ju and in 1935 adopted the name of Kim Il-sung, meaning 'becoming the sun'. Kim Il-sung was the leader of North Korea since it was established in 1948 until his death. Between 1948 to 1972, he held the post of Prime Minister and from 1972 to 1994 as President of North Korea. Following his death, he was succeded by his son Kim Jong-il (b. 1941-2011). The senior Kim, according to officail records, was born in a small village in Mangyongdae (then called Namni). The reverse side of the 5000 Won shows the birth place of Kim. This set of notes issued with overprints to celebrate his 100th year of birth.
